Lula’s goal, described by the president as “one of the most important state visits at the start of his third term,” which began on January 1, is to “renew relations with what has been the country’s main trading partner since 2009.”
The state visit was originally scheduled for the end of March, but bacterial-viral bronchopneumonia forced the Brazilian ruler to postpone it until April 11.
Lula, 77, a symbol of the Latin American left, will have official meetings in Beijing and Shanghai.
The agenda will kick off Thursday in Shanghai, where he will attend the inauguration ceremony for the former Brazilian president and ally LulaDilma Rousseff as the new head of the BRICS Development Bank (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
On this day, he will also meet with businessmen, and at night he will go to Beijing.

In the Chinese capital, he will meet with Chairman of the National People’s Assembly (PNP, Legislative) Zhao Leji; Prime Minister Li Qiang, and later be received with official ceremony by Chairman Xi Jinping.
“The schedule will include an open meeting, an agreement signing ceremony, and then a closed bilateral meeting. This will be followed by a gift exchange ceremony, photo registration and, finally, an official dinner,” the Brazilian government said.
