Bucharest aims to boost its air defense potential with fifth-generation multifunctional aircraft.
Romania will buy America’s fifth-generation F-35 fighter. This was announced on April 11 by the press service of the President of the country following the meeting of the members of the Supreme Defense Council.
It was noted that the agenda of the event focused on the security situation in the Black Sea region against the backdrop of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, external interference in the democratic process in Moldova, as well as in the context of prospects for additional support for to Ukraine from NATO, the European Union and the international community.
The participants of the meeting also reviewed the development of the Romanian military aviation and approved the Concept for Realizing the Air Defense Operational Potential of the Fifth Generation Multifunctional Aircraft
“The modernization process of the Air Force will continue by acquiring the latest generation of F-35 aircraft,” the release said.
It was emphasized that fighter-bombers using precision-guided munitions would allow “air superiority to be achieved and maintained.”
Recall that in January the Canadian government signed a final contract for the purchase of 88 American F-35 fighters to replace the aging CF-18s.
