The height of the ash column exceeds 10 km, which poses a higher threat to aviation. There is heavy ash in the surrounding villages.

A powerful volcanic eruption occurred in northeastern Russia, in Kamchatka on the night of Tuesday, April 11. A giant column of ash rose into the sky to a height of more than 10 kilometers, Reuters reports.

It was noted that the ash column from the Shiveluch volcano poses an increased threat to international flights.

Currently, a large ash cloud is drifting to the west at a height of up to 15 kilometers. Local residents were urged not to leave their homes, as the volcanic ash is extremely harmful to health.

“The sky within a radius of several tens of kilometers from the volcano, including the villages of Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk, was covered with an ash cloud. Thunder rumbled due to electrostatic stress in the ash cloud. Ashfall began in Klyuchi and in village of Mayskoye,” said the head of the district of social networks Oleg Bondarenko.

Due to poor visibility and heavy ash, more than 250 km of roads were blocked, and all regular buses to the area of the explosion were cancelled.

Shiveluch, one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Kamchatka, has experienced about 60 significant eruptions over the past 10 thousand years, the last of which occurred in 2007.

As reported, in March on the island of Java, the Merapi volcano erupted, throwing a column of smoke up to seven kilometers high.

On February 8, the Sakurajima volcano in Japan erupted.
