The Chinese Army’s Eastern Operational Command said on Monday it had “successfully” completed its military exercises around Taiwan after deploying an aircraft carrier nearby.

The maneuvers, which lasted three days, allowed the Chinese forces to conduct various exercises, test their capabilities, simulate attacks, and implement a possible blockade of the island.

“The exercise, conducted from April 8 to 10, made it possible to comprehensively test the combat capability of the army in the current conditions,” the Eastern Operational Command said in a statement released by the Xinhua news agency.

The maneuvers involved several fighter jets with live ammunition and other aircraft, with which the Chinese forces conducted various counter-measures with the aim of “destroying the enemy’s air force” and maintaining its “air supremacy.”

Thus, the Chinese forces concluded that the troops were “ready to fight when necessary” and emphasized that “they will be able to resolutely suppress any attempt at independence by Taiwan”.

The escalation of tension in the region began with a trip to the island by the now former President of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, last August, although they recovered after a meeting between Taiwan’s President Tsai Ying-wen and current Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty.
