He US Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, vowed this Sunday that the government would do “everything possible” to keep mifepristone abortion pills available in the country after a Texas judge ruled to revoke his medical clearance.
“We will do our best to keep it available not only this week, but also in the future, because mifepristone is one of the safest and most effective drugs,” the official said in an interview with CNN.
Becerra said the order issued on Friday by Texas federal judge Matthew Kachsmarik to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to revoke the drug’s health guarantee, which has been in place since 2000, is “unacceptable to the United States.”
The judge gave a week’s time for the order to take effect, so that the Joe Biden government had time to appeal it. For his part, the health minister clarified that they had already appealed Kaczmarik’s decision and that “all options are being considered,” including the possibility of the FDA ignoring the order.
Becerra accused the judge of wanting to impose “his opinion over the opinion of scientists” and warned that the move could set a precedent that would jeopardize approval for the use of drugs such as insulin or the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
“We want women to continue to have access to this proven drug. Millions of women have used it around the world,” she said.
Texas revokes license to use pills
Texas Federal Judge Matthew Kachsmarik yesterday ordered the annulment of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval for the drug in 2000. In other words, he issued an order ending worldwide approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. United States
The ruling, however, gives the legal representatives of the Joe Biden government a week to appeal the decision.
In the court text, the judge argues that the FDA violated due process in approving mifepristone and did not take into account the drug’s “bad health effects” on people who take it.
“The FDA has not fully addressed an important aspect of the issue by missing out on any evaluation of the drug’s psychological effects or evaluation of its long-term medical consequences,” Judge Kaczmarik wrote in the document.
