On the eve of the meeting, it was decided to transfer the temple to OCU, but the priests refused to hand over the keys. Clashes broke out between supporters of both religions today.
A clash between supporters of the UOC-MP and the OCU took place near the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, after the residents of Kamenetz-Podolsky voted for its transfer to the OCU. This was reported on Sunday, April 9, by the Kod Kamenets publication.
It was noted that the participants of the meeting on the eve voted for the transfer of the temple from the Moscow Patriarchate to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, however, the priests of the UOC-MP have not yet allowed the revision commission on the territory of the temple and have not given the keys to the shrine. Therefore, today the protests continued and gained momentum.
UOC parishioners formed a ring around the cathedral to prevent anyone from entering. Around 18:00, the confrontation escalated into clashes between activists and believers. The police tried to separate them.
Activists shouted “Suitcase, station, Russia!”.
After 19.00 the activists started pitching tents. They say they stay overnight. At 20:30, traffic on Cathedral Street (next to the cathedral) was heavy.
In turn, the UOC-MP announced an attempt to occupy the cathedral. According to them, the police are not answering calls, and they are trying to subpoena their supporters.
Recall that on April 4, the Kamyanets-Podilskyi city council deprived the UOC-MP of the right to use land.
On the same day, the Khmelnitsky Regional Council banned the UOC-MP from the region. Local regional authorities are recommended to conduct an inventory of land plots used by the UOC-MP with subsequent termination of the right to use.
