China’s armed forces have begun a three-day “Joint Sharp Sword” military exercise in the sea around the island of Taiwan.
China has begun large-scale exercises involving aviation and navy around Taiwan. Beijing said that on the first day of the exercise, the military imposed a siege and blockade on the island. This was announced on Sunday, April 8, by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China.
“Today’s exercise aims to test the possibility of seizing control of the sea, air and information in support of the joint combat system. The task forces simultaneously organized patrols around the island to form positions for complete siege and containment of the island,” the message said.
As follows from the statement of the Chinese military, the exercises are complex – they involve missile forces, all types of aviation and navy, electronic intelligence and electronic warfare troops.
“A number of destroyers and frigates quickly rushed into the surrounding waters of Taiwan Island, with the flexibility to capture advantageous positions and organize close combat attacks, long-term deterrence, air defense and anti-missile exercises according to the situation in the area,” the Chinese Defense Ministry said of the exercises.
Beijing called the maneuvers a stern warning to Taiwanese authorities.
According to CNN, the exercise came a day after Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen returned from a 10-day trip to Central America and the United States, where she met with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.
Note that the United States could send its soldiers to Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion of the island. This was said by the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, Michael McCall.
Notably, China condemned the meeting held in the United States between the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Kevin McCarthy, and the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen.
