The Ukrainian energy system has been operating for almost two months without restrictions on consumers with a power reserve. We achieved this result thanks to the titanic work of power engineers, our international partners, who helped in restoring the system. The hardest winter is over. The next step is the opening of electricity exports, which will allow attracting additional financial resources for the necessary restoration of the destroyed and repair of damaged energy infrastructure, Minister Herman Galushchenko said.
Profits from exports will be used to restore the energy infrastructure.
The minister explained that providing Ukrainians with electricity is an absolute priority. Therefore, the export of electricity will work while providing Ukrainian consumers with electricity and may be suspended if the situation changes.
The authorized capacity for export by the European network of transmission system operators ENTSO-E is 400 MW.
Background
The energy system of Ukraine survived despite a very hard winter. Despite regular Russian missile attacks, there is light in the homes of Ukrainians. Power engineers consider the damage from shelling and are preparing to work underground.
Since the beginning of the cold weather, the Russian army has carried out 15 massive missile attacks and 18 drone attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. These missile strikes were aimed at unbalancing the interconnected energy system, thus plunging the Ukrainians into darkness and cold. More than 50 percent of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was damaged as a result of rocket attacks, DW was told by the Energy Ministry in Kyiv. We are talking about both generation and the power transmission system.
More damage – in thermal energy. Literally any thermal power plant (TPP) was hit. There is also a lot of destruction and damage at hydroelectric power plants (HPPs), which made it possible to balance the energy system during peak loads.
All major thermal and hydroelectric power plants were damaged by Russian shelling. Almost all key main substations operated by Ukrenergo had at least 3-4 arrivals. We have facilities in the network that have been visited six times, and some up to 20 times, – says Volodymyr Kudrytsky, head of the national energy system operator NPC Ukrenergo.
The damage due to the destruction of Ukrainian hydroelectric power stations and the occupation of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station now amount to about 40 billion hryvnias. Only at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the Russian occupiers caused damage of almost 17 billion hryvnias.
