Council of Governors of State Universities Florida banned the use of the TikTok app on its wireless internet networks and on mobile devices it owns, local media reported this Thursday.
The ban that affects tik tak and other applications began being released to students, faculty, and staff on Wednesday afternoons and evenings by university authorities with immediate effect.
The measure is in line with the state of emergency approved last week by the US Board of Governors, according to the Miami Herald. Floridawhich operates twelve public universities in that state, arguing that the apps can create security problems.
In addition to tik takown Chinese company ByteDance, other banned apps are WeChat, Tencent QQ, VKontakte and Kaspersky.
“The Evil Influence of China”
Governor FloridaRepublican Ron DeSantis proposed in February to ban the use of tik tak and other social networks from countries of concern.
The initiative, being debated in legislative chambers, aims to protect citizens’ privacy and “digital rights” from big tech firms.
The Governor indicated that his proposal is in line with efforts to “combat the harmful influence of China by removing nefarious platforms like tik tak any activity supported by the state”.
“We don’t want to wait here in Floridauntil we all find ourselves in a digital dungeon,” DeSantis said, justifying his initiative.
TikTok, “distraction” for learning
The Governor has directed the Department of Management Services (DMS) to issue a formal recommendation to the State to take all necessary security measures to block access to applications and software related to China from all state institutions.
For his part, Republican Senator Danny Burges introduced a bill against the use of tik takon the grounds that it serves as a “distraction” for student learning.
The White House banned the app from mobile devices owned by the federal government after the Senate in Washington passed legislation to that effect.
