Armenia refused to participate in NATO exercises two years ago, but now, amid cooling relations with the Russian Federation, it has agreed.
Armenia will take part in the military exercises of NATO countries, which will start on April 22. This was stated by Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh in a briefing on Thursday, April 6.
“About 9,000 US troops and 17,000 troops from 26 allied and partner countries will participate, and part of the exercise will cover 10 different European countries,” the US official said.
According to him, many countries that are not members of NATO will take part in these exercises: Armenia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Kosovo.
“This is an annual exercise that will last about two months and will focus on the strategic deployment of US-based forces, the use of army stocks and cooperation with allies and partners in Europe,” a Pentagon spokesman explained.
Singh added that the purpose of the maneuvers is to demonstrate the US Army’s ability to rapidly deploy combat-ready forces and equipment, “avoid threats to peace in Europe and protect the continent from aggression .”
It should be noted that Armenia refused to participate in NATO exercises two years ago. However, this time he changed his position due to the cooling of relations with the Kremlin and CSTO, which did not support Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the conflict with Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Recall, earlier it became known that the military exercises Platinum Wolf-2023, organized together with the United States and ten other states of the North Atlantic Alliance, will be held in Serbia from June 16 to 30.
