Former US President Donald Trump’s subpoena to the Manhattan District Court to reveal the charges is attracting attention not only domestically, but around the world.
The entire world is watching the criminal prosecution of former US President Donald Trump. They are particularly relevant in light of the fact that Trump is not only a former president, but also a participant in a new election race. And Ukraine’s interest in this is special – Donald Trump’s statements about the need to end military support for Kyiv mean that the Manhattan court’s verdict can have a direct impact on the future of our country.
The substance of the accusations
During the election, in which Trump won, there were attempts to identify, extract and hide negative information about him and increase Trump’s electoral prospects.
The former president worked hard to cover up these actions, as well as attempting to violate state and federal election laws.
In total, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, according to the indictment. In addition to payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, there are two other episodes in the case.
In one case, American Media Inc. (AMI) paid US$30,000 to a former Trump Tower janitor who claimed to have a story about Trump’s illegitimate child. In another case, AMI paid $150,000 to a woman who claimed she had a sexual relationship with Trump.
There are other things
In addition to the New York trial, there are three other investigations against Trump. They range from efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, the attack on the Capitol in January 2021, and the former president’s careless handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.
The Georgia District Attorney continues to investigate whether Trump’s contacts with state officials after the 2020 election could be considered a violation of electoral law.
After the election, Trump called Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and said, “I just need to find 11,780 votes.” These votes are crucial for Trump to win one of the key swing states.
After alleging electoral fraud, Trump suggested that such a result was possible if Raffensperger could “change” the result.
“We believe our numbers are correct,” Raffensperger replied to Trump. And then Georgia’s Fulton County Attorney Fanny Willis began investigating potential state election crimes, punishable by fines or jail time.
Political side
It is clear that Trump himself, his entourage and supporters are trying to portray all investigations as baseless politically motivated prosecutions.
Trump will try to take advantage of the situation and build himself an image of a victim of the system to use it in the election race.
The former president of the United States called this case a “witch hunt”, suggesting to move the hearings to another place where more Republicans live, and accusing Judge Juan Mercan of self-hatred.
“The only crime I have committed is fearlessly defending our country from those who seek to destroy it … I have a Trump-hater judge from a Trump-hater family,” the former president said.
There are fears that Trump’s most radical supporters may resort to violent protest actions. It is no coincidence that Trump himself warned that a court hearing could lead to “death and destruction.”
Important for everyone
America’s role in the world remains large. It has demonstrated its ability to lead the world in the difficult conditions of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine.
Without Washington, a large pro-Ukrainian coalition of countries could not materialize or quickly collapse. But Trump has expressed consistent doubts about the appropriateness of additional aid to Ukraine from the United States.
