Together with their colleague Diana Rojas Alvarez, in charge of combating chikungunya and Zika, they called for swift action to stop the spread of mosquitoes, given the risk of recurrences outside of historical transmission areas.
Figures of dengue and chikungunya
He dengue It is endemic in 100 countries but poses a threat to 29 more. In recent years, the number of cases has increased exponentially, from half a million in 2000 to 5.2 million in 2019, Velayudhan explained.
Chikungunya, discovered so far in 115 countries since its discovery in the 1950s, is registering impressive growth in the Americas region, warns Rojas Alvarez. About 135,000 cases have been reported on this continent since January, compared to 50,000 in the first half of 2022.
