The organization states that the Kharkiv region has become the most affected region in Ukraine due to the war.
Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine caused $2.6 billion worth of damage to the country’s cultural heritage. This was stated in the UNESCO report, according to CNN on Monday, April 3.
“As of February 24, 2023, the total cost of damage from identified assets is estimated at $2.6 billion,” the statement said.
From this value:
-
$1.7 billion comes from “historic cities, buildings and sites of recognized cultural/social value”
-
$650 million for tourism facilities,
-
$143 million for “movable cultural property and collections, cultural repository”,
-
$150 million for “buildings/workshops/ateliers dedicated to cultural and creative industries”.
The most affected region in Ukraine was the Kharkiv region, which suffered 30% of the total damage to its cultural values.
The damage is estimated at around $15.2 billion, which includes loss of income from tourism, arts, sports, recreation, entertainment, cultural education, creative and cultural industries.
“The war has greatly affected the diversity and richness of culture and cultural heritage in Ukraine, damaging infrastructure and cultural assets, reducing livelihoods for creators, carriers and practitioners of culture, restricting on access to culture and hindering the exercise of cultural rights,” UNESCO said.
Remember, on November 24, 2022, it was reported that Russia will no longer chair the UN World Heritage Committee on Education, Science and Culture, but will remain a member.
