The US Secretary of State has requested the release of two Americans detained in Russia.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Sunday, April 2, called Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The topic of conversation was the arrest in the Russian Federation of American journalist Evan Gershkovich.
“Today, I spoke with Minister Sergey Lavrov to express our deep concern over Russia’s unacceptable detention of a US citizen, a journalist. I called for his release and illegally detained US citizen Paul Whelan,” wrote US Secretary of State on Twitter.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the telephone conversation took place on the initiative of the American side.
The press service of the Russian department noted that Lavrov told Blinken about “the need to respect the decisions of the Russian authorities, taken in accordance with the law and international obligations.”
In Russia, they said that the West was stirring up trouble “with the clear intention of giving this case a political coloring,” because Gershkovich was allegedly “caught red-handed while trying to obtain secret information.”
“During the talks, some topical issues of a bilateral nature were also touched upon,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Remember, on March 30, in Russia, security forces detained a US citizen, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal, Evan Gershkovich. The FSB accused him of “spying on a Russian military-industrial complex enterprise.” The court remanded the journalist in custody until May 29.
