On Saturday, April 1, the head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, met with the head of the International Gymnastics Federation, Morinari Watanabe, who is in Ukraine on a visit, the Presidential Office reported.
“Participants in the meeting told Morinari Watanabe about the aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine, including crimes against Ukrainian children, including forced deportation. Ukrainian representatives also noted that Russia is using athletes it to promote aggression, so they called on Morinari Watanabe to support the initiative to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the 2024 Olympics,” the statement said.
During the meeting, Yermak said that “90% of the Russian gymnastics representatives are at the same time members of the Russian army club – CSKA, which essentially represents the Russian military – certainly those who daily participate in bombing, destruction of Ukrainian cities and the killing of Ukrainians.”
“We know that sanctions are the best non-lethal means of influence. Therefore, Ukraine emphasizes the need to extend sanctions. And one of their types is to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participate in the Olympic Games and other international competitions,” asserted the head of the Office of the President.
He also noted that “Ukraine aims to expel Russian troops from its land, restore territorial integrity. And in relation to those who support Russian aggression, corresponding measures should be taken from all international organization, including sports.”
Earlier it was reported that Ukraine will not participate in competitions where Russians will be allowed.
