NATO allies should meet Ukraine’s needs for tanks in the medium term, the head of the Bundeswehr believes.
NATO countries will provide Ukraine with two battalions of Leopard 2 tanks, as well as four battalions with Leopard 1. In total, this is 160 combat vehicles, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in an interview for the newspaper Die Welt, published on Saturday, April 1.
According to him, Germany, Poland and other allies will send two battalions of Leopard 2 to Ukraine, consisting of 60 tanks. And before the end of the year, four battalions of Leopard 1 – 100 tanks will be added to them.
At the same time, the minister said that it is almost impossible to send more of these tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, because “the resources of the allies are limited” and Germany “cannot provide everything, because there are spare that is not expendable.”
“I don’t see any scenario where it is possible to send additional Leopards to Ukraine beyond what has been announced,” Pistorius said.
At the same time, he recalled that the United States and Great Britain also provide tanks to Ukraine, therefore, together, the NATO allies should satisfy Ukraine’s needs for tanks in the medium term.
