Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 3,250 crimes against Ukrainians have been registered in Berlin. Such data was published the other day by the Alliance of Ukrainian Organizations.
At the request of the organization, Berlin Chamber member Catherine Walen from the Green Party conducted an inquiry into the attacks on Ukrainians committed since February 24, 2022 in the German capital.
Police statistics show that there are two and a half times more attacks with bodily injuries against Ukrainians than against other groups.
The high number of crimes was especially in the districts of Mitte (640) and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (484). In other places, they are less. Thefts (1294), bodily harm (704), fraud (301), threats (234) and insults (117) were the most frequent. Only 23 investigations ended in court cases.
At the same time, the police did not provide information on whether these attacks were politically motivated, although they may have this data.
“We don’t know this, but there is reason to believe that we are talking about hate crimes,” the alliance said.
Earlier, a hostel for refugees from Ukraine burned down in Germany. All 14 people who were accommodated in the dormitory were able to leave the area in time and were not injured. Authorities and police believe the fire was deliberately set.
