There is some exaggeration of what ATACMS can and cannot do, the American general asserted.
The United States is not yet ready to provide Ukraine with ATACMS long-range missiles, but is considering other options to give the Armed Forces more of a chance on the battlefield with Russian aggressors. This is what the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said in an interview for Defense One, released the previous day.
He emphasized that while there was a political decision not to provide ATACMS to the Ukrainians. According to him, “from a military point of view, we have quite a few ATACMS, and we have to make sure that we also have our own stocks of ammunition.”
“And the range of weapons – I think there is some exaggeration of what ATACMS can and cannot do … The range of ATACMS is longer, but there are other systems that can provide the same range,” said of the general.
Mark Milley clarified that there are drones with similar capabilities, and that “the British have some systems.”
“So there are some other things we can do to give them (Ukrainian military – ed.) some advantage. But right now we are not providing ATACMS,” added the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
On the eve of the media reported that early next week the United States will announce a new package of military aid to Ukraine for 2.6 billion dollars. It is expected to include six types of munitions, including precision-guided aviation munitions, as well as many other items.
