US President Joe Biden asked Russia on Friday to release American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in Russia and charged with espionage.
“Let him go,” Biden replied to a press question in White Housemoments before boarding the presidential helicopter.
The president was also asked if he planned to expel Russian diplomats in response to Gershkovich’s arrest, and he said that was not in his plans.
“That’s not the plan right now,” he said.
The White House blamed yesterday Thursday Russia about the persecution of US citizens and assured that he was in touch with the government of Vladimir Putin after his arrest.
“The fact that the Russian government is persecuting US citizens is unacceptable. We condemn in the strongest terms the arrest of Mr. Hershkowitz,” a White House spokeswoman said. Karine Jean-Pierrethrough a statement.
Lefortovo court Moscow on Thursday sentenced Hershkowitz, an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal, to two months in pre-trial detention.
