The head of the NBU, Andriy Pyshny, said he urged the RBI not to postpone the decision to withdraw the bank from the Russian Federation.
The National Bank of Ukraine notes positive signs in the Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) group’s statement about plans to divest its Russian division. However, the regulator emphasizes that this statement does not contain a specific plan. This is stated in the comments of the NBU, published on Friday, March 31.
The NBU believes that the statement “may indicate a transition from the search for “strategic options for the future” to the bank’s readiness for a real reduction in business activity in Russia.
“We express hope that the RBI Group, as a responsible member of the international financial community, will make efforts in the near future to implement these initiatives,” the National Bank asserted.
The press service of the regulator reported that the head of the NBU, Andriy Pyshny, appealed to the supervisory board of the RBI before the general meeting and urged the Group not to postpone the decision to withdraw the bank from the Russian Federation.
The head of the National Bank also drew attention to the unacceptability of Raiffeisenbank’s potential exit from the Russian Federation through the exchange of Raiffeisenbank’s assets with the sanctioned Sberbank in Austria.
“A deal to allow a Kremlin-owned bank to keep its frozen sanctioned assets in Europe and return them to Russia to continue to maintain economic stability and Russia’s ability to wage war in Ukraine does not stand up to the investigation, let alone the violation of sanctions restrictions,” he said. summarized in the press service of the NBU.
As a reminder, Raiffeisen Bank International is seeking to sell or spin off its Russian subsidiary, Raiffeisenbank.
Earlier, the European Central Bank demanded that Raiffeisen Bank International withdraw from Russia.
