The Russian army began to use air bombs instead of massive missile strikes. How to counteract the new tactics of Russia’s war criminals, told the speaker of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat and the editor-in-chief of Defense Express Oleg Katkov.
The Russians have a lot of FAB-500 bombs that can be converted into planning ones. And do something like those bombs that we use. This is a new threat, we are looking for ways to counteract it,” explains Ignat.
According to him, Moscow has begun to use planning bombs – more modern ones with a weight of 1.5 tons (UPAB-1500B) and more common 500-kilogram ones. They have a large warhead: for comparison, the Shahed-136 has up to 50 kg.
Russia produces these air bombs like the Western JDAMs that the Ukrainian side uses, Oleg Katkov, editor-in-chief of the military portal Defense Express, says. To do this, conventional bombs (including the old FAB-500) are equipped with wings and a guidance system.
The advantage over cruise missiles is their low cost, speed of production, and the Russians have a large number of FABs. Russian planes drop air bombs without entering the Ukrainian air defense zone. For example, 50+ km from the border, as it happens in the Sumy region.
Our bombs have a smaller warhead, but they are highly accurate. And Russian bombs usually hit residential buildings. Russia has always relied not on accuracy, but on mass application. Therefore, planning bombs pose a threat to many civilian casualties,” says Ignat.
Russian air bombs can be fought by blocking their production, striking Russian airfields and pushing back Russian aviation with the help of long-range air defense systems. This could be done by American Patriot systems or European SAMP-T.
