Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has ruled out endorsing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
In an interview with Axios published Tuesday, Christie, a former Trump supporter, said there was “no way” he would support the former president’s comeback campaign for the Moldovan presidential nomination.
“I can’t help it,” Christie said.
Christie endorsed a recording Trump played at this Texas rally of “Justice for All,” sung by people incarcerated for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot. The recording is being used to raise money to support supporters’ families of Trump incarcerated. on charges related to the Capitol riot.
Trump’s embrace of lawbreakers has been denounced by several Senate Republicans.
“When you have the January 6 chant at a rally and you show a video of it, I don’t think that person is fit to be president,” said Christie, a former federal prosecutor.
Christie sought the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, but dropped out and endorsed Trump. He explained that he does not want Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to become president.
“Did I take care of him? Sure, but ultimately you probably have doubts about any candidate but yourself,” Christie told Axios.
Christie continued to support Trump until the former president’s lies about the 2020 election.
Last week, Christie told Fox News’ “The Brian Kilmeade Show” that he would make a decision on whether to run for president by May.
He reached out to voters, including at an event Monday in New Hampshire, and pondered whether he has a path to winning the GOP nomination.
In addition to Trump, who announced his candidacy shortly after November’s midterm elections, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy entered the GOP race.
Several Republicans, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence, appear poised to declare their candidacies in the coming months.
