This statement was made in Stockholm after the Hungarian authorities asked for “assurances” that Sweden would not “interfere in the internal politics of Hungary.”
Sweden does not intend to give any obligations to Hungary in exchange for the ratification of the NATO accession protocol. This was announced on Tuesday, March 28, by Foreign Minister Tobias Bilstrom, reports the Swedish agency TT.
So, when asked if Sweden will give assurances to Hungary related to the NATO accession process, Bilström said: “No, and I would note that Finland, whose protocol has just been ratified (by Hungary – ed.), have exactly the same. views on issues of the rule of law, like Sweden, like the EU.”
“There are no special memoranda, no special agreements with Hungary, and we do not intend to conclude them,” Bilström stressed.
The said statement was made in Stockholm after the Hungarian authorities asked for “assurances” that Sweden will not “interfere in the internal politics of Hungary in the same way that Hungary does in the affairs of Sweden.
Here, the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry also noted that Sweden and the EU “criticize the rule of law in Hungary, but I don’t think this issue is related to the process of joining NATO.”
Earlier, Hungary said it supports Sweden’s accession to NATO and that the country’s parliament will ratify the application. However, after that, the ratification date was postponed several times.
