The Belarusians said that by agreeing to the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the country, they are allegedly taking “forced response actions” to strengthen their own security and defense capability and in no way violate the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
The training of Belarusian pilots capable of flying aircraft with specific munitions, the modernization of such aircraft, as well as the deployment of nuclear warheads on the territory of Belarus without the transfer of Minsk control over them, as well as access to relevant technologies, in no way contradict the provisions of Articles I and II of the NPT, – Belarusian Foreign Ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry of Russian-controlled Belarus also added that this allegedly “is not an innovation in the field of military cooperation between non-nuclear and nuclear states.”
Minsk claims that NATO “has long had the practice of joint nuclear missions,” and on the territory of the European member countries of the alliance more than 150 US tactical nuclear weapons are allegedly stored and more than 250 aircraft have been prepared for their possible use.
It should be reminded that on March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, and the storage for it should be prepared by July. NATO called Russia’s nuclear rhetoric “dangerous and irresponsible,” while the US said it saw no sign of Russia preparing to use nuclear weapons. Head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell sees a possible transfer of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus as a threat to European security.
