Armenia’s plans to join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court are absolutely unacceptable.
This was reported by the propaganda state agency TASS, citing a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Moscow considers absolutely unacceptable the plans of official Yerevan to join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court against the backdrop of the recent illegal and legally void “warrants” of the ISS in relation to the Russian leadership, the agency’s interlocutor said.
The source also noted that Yerevan was warned about the extremely negative consequences for bilateral relations in case of accession to the Rome Charter.
On March 17, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of war crimes in Ukraine. If Yerevan ratifies the Rome Statute, then, according to the document, the country’s authorities will be obliged to arrest Putin if he visits Armenia.
On March 24, the Constitutional Court of Armenia published a decision that the Rome Statute does not contradict the Basic Law of the country. For now, the Armenian government can submit the Rome Statute for ratification to the Parliament.
Armenia noted that they launched the process of ratifying the Rome Charter at the end of 2022. This was explained by the desire of the country’s authorities in the future to hold the leadership of Azerbaijan accountable in the International Criminal Court for possible war crimes within the framework of the long-term conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
