Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday a “pause” in the process of approving justice reform, which is being studied by the government. parliament and it sparked mass protests in the streets for nearly three months.
In a message to the country, Netanyahu announced that the final adoption of various reform bills has been postponed to the next session of parliament, which opens after the New Year holidays. Easter (from April 5 to 13), partially yielding to the demands of opponents.
Following the announcement, the Gistradut, Israel’s main trade union confederation, announced on Monday the end of the general strike announced hours earlier.
“After the announcement of the Prime Minister, I announce the end of the strike. […] convened this morning,” Arnon Bar David, head of the Histadrut, said in a statement.

A crowd – about 80,000 demonstrators, according to the local press – gathered on Monday afternoon outside the parliament in Jerusalem to protest the reform.
A counter-demonstration was also planned at the same location, raising fears of clashes between supporters of both camps.
The judicial reform project, promoted by the Netanyahu government, one of the most right-wing in Israeli history, aims to increase the power of politicians over judges and reduce the role of Supreme Court.
Its detractors believe that the reform threatens the separation of powers, the democratic nature of State of Israeland the abandonment of the project has spawned one of the largest mass protest movements in the country’s history over the past three months.
