The Verdi and EVG unions have announced a 24-hour rail strike starting at midnight on Monday and threatening to paralyze all of Germany. workers they demand a 10.5% pay rise for everyone in the public sector.

According to EVG, all suburban, medium and high-speed services of Deutsche Bahn, the country’s main rail company, are expected to stop. They foresee that the strike will also affect the aviation sector, causing many essential flights to be cancelled.

From my side, Verdi Hamburg reported that agreements have been reached with affected companies and organizations to ensure that emergency services can move in the event of an accident, landing or if necessary, urgent medical transportation of patients.

Lufthansa confirmed the cancellation and some delays of some flights already on Sunday due to technical problems. The reason is technical problems with external providers that affect check-in and landing at Frankfurt Airport, according to Bloomberg news agency.

This strike is affecting the transport sector just before the peak of the Holy Week movement and due to high demand after years of restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the morning, the strikers will gather for a rally at the Rathausmarkt and then march through the city center to the union building at the Besenbinderhof. There will be a final meeting.

protests in France

Last Friday, the Council of Europe expressed concern about the “excessive use of force” by the French police in demonstrations against the pension reform approved by the government of Emanuel Macron.

“There have been violent incidents, some of which were directed against law enforcement. But sporadic acts of violence by some protesters or other reprehensible acts (…) cannot justify the excessive use of force by state agents,” said the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. Dunya Mijatovic is right.

The institution also expressed concern about the “arrest and detention” of protesters, as it could violate the “right to liberty and security” of people in Paris, the city where France’s most violent clashes take place.
