The governments of the two countries decided to recognize each other against the backdrop of Tegucigalpa’s severing ties with Taiwan.
China and Honduras have established diplomatic relations. This was announced on March 26 by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
It was noted that on Sunday the countries signed Joint communiqué between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Honduras on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“The governments of the two countries have decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the level of ambassadors from the date of signing the communiqué,” Beijing said.
The document states that the Honduran government has decided to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognize and follow the “One China” principle.
Earlier, the Honduras Foreign Ministry announced that the country was breaking diplomatic relations with the self-governing island, which China considers its territory.
The Taiwanese administration in response closed the diplomatic mission in Tegucigalpa.
