Hungary will not arrest war criminal Russian President Vladimir Putin despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. According to the head of the prime minister’s office, Gergey Guiyash, Budapest has “no legal grounds” to arrest Putin if he arrives in Hungary.
The neighboring country signed and ratified the Rome Statute, which obliges the participating countries to comply with all court decisions, but did not implement it in its legislation.
We can turn to Hungarian law and, on the basis of this, we cannot arrest the Russian president, since the charter of the ISS was not introduced in Hungary, Reuters quotes Guias.
We are talking about the fact that Budapest only formally approved the Rome Statute, but did not change national legislation to implement it.
Gouyash also added that the Hungarian government has not formed a position on the warrant for Putin’s arrest.
Recall that the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin, considering him guilty of the illegal deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children. The issuance of the warrant means that Putin could be arrested if he travels to any member country of the International Criminal Court.
