A representative office of the International Criminal Court will appear in Ukraine – on March 23, in The Hague, Prosecutor General Andrey Kostin signed a corresponding agreement with the Secretary of the ICC Peter Lewis.
This is just the beginning, but a solid start. We look forward to further cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of Russia’s crimes against Ukraine. We will not stop until all those responsible are brought to justice. Including the top military-political leadership of Russia, Kostin emphasized.
The Pre-trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court previously issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova, who is responsible for kidnapping Ukrainian children and taking them out of Ukraine.
In a commentary to Reuters, Prosecutor General Kostin pointed out that Putin and his henchmen should be tried in The Hague in absentia. According to Kostin, this will ensure the inevitability of punishment for war crimes, even if the ways cannot be arrested and delivered to the International Criminal Court.
I believe that legal proceedings can be held in absentia, because it is important to achieve justice for international crimes, even if the perpetrators are not in the dock, the Prosecutor General emphasized.
According to the rules of the ISS, the accused suspect must be present during the trial.
Arrest Putin on a court order can 123 member countries of the Rome Charter and countries that will accept the appropriate obligations.
