Rafael Grossi announced the cancellation of plans to create a demilitarization zone around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
The issue of demilitarization of the zone around the Zaporizhzhya NPP is no longer considered due to difficulties in implementing this process. This is what the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said in a speech at a seminar at the American non-governmental Council on Foreign Relations.
“We know the additional difficulties this will cause, especially in the zone of active hostilities. It will be very difficult to carry out the verification process – more than a mile from the demilitarized zone, the territory will be highly militarized. Therefore, we no longer consider it,” he said.
According to Grossi, if a demilitarized zone around the ZNPP is created, the organization’s actions could be interpreted as “legitimizing” the presence of Russian troops.
The head of the IAEA said that now the organization will focus on the safety of the station.
It was previously reported that the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is at risk of cutting the last power line.
As the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said, today no international institution can solve the problem of the work of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
