NATO should not sit on a powder barrel – said the former Polish minister, talking about Kaliningrad.
NATO must demilitarize Russia’s Kaliningrad region if Finland and Sweden join the Alliance. This was stated in an interview with Dorzeczy.pl by former Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland Romuald Sheremetiev.
When asked how Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO would change the situation in Europe, the Polish politician replied:
“The security of the entire eastern flank will be greatly enhanced, because the Finns and the Swedes have a decent army. Moreover, in such a system, the Baltic Sea will be a NATO sea. However, there will be a huge problem of the so -called of Kaliningrad. “
Sheremetyev said it was necessary to “ask Kaliningrad to stop calling itself after the criminal Kalinin,” because this Soviet leader was responsible for the killings of Polish prisoners of war in Katyn.
“Second, this region needs to be demilitarized, because NATO cannot sit on a powder,” he stressed.
When asked what Moscow’s response might be to NATO’s expansion, Poland’s former Deputy Minister of Defense replied:
“There will be howls, as usual, and threats of nuclear weapons, because the Russians can’t threaten them with anything.”
Earlier, Russian troops in the Kaliningrad region “rehearsed” a nuclear attack during the exercises.
