The press calls Kallas one of the possible contenders for the position of NATO Secretary General, since the power of the current head of the Alliance will expire in the fall of 2023.
Representatives of Eastern European countries must apply for leadership positions in the European Union and NATO in the next election. This was announced on Wednesday, March 22, by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, writes Politico.
At the same time, he noted that Eastern Europe has worthy candidates for leadership positions in organizations.
“We have been members of NATO and the European Union for 19 years… Do we have people… worse than the ‘old’ Europeans? Or are we not there yet? I think the answer is: no, we really have very good people,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Estonia added that “we should be in the spotlight looking for the best vacancies.”
“We have proven ourselves in both of these organizations,” Kallas emphasizes.
The politician announced this on the eve of the summit of EU leaders, which will be held in Brussels on Thursday, March 23.
Kallas himself is considered one of the likely contenders for the post of NATO leader.
It will be recalled that in Estonia, the Reform Party, led by Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, won the parliamentary elections.
Earlier, Kaya Kallas offered to provide Ukraine with weapons similar to the COVID-19 vaccine.
