The People’s Democratic Party of Turkey is counting on this way to reduce Erdogan’s chances of maintaining his power in the country.
Turkey’s pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said it would not nominate a candidate for the May presidential election. Thus, the chances of the opposition coalition to topple Recep Tayyip Erdogan will increase. Bloomberg reported this on Wednesday, March 22.
The party’s co-chair, Pervin Buldan, said the PDP and five allied parties would campaign against Erdogan’s “one-man rule”.
The NDP did not directly back opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, but the move avoided a formal split between the president’s rivals, who are keen to present a united front ahead of the May 14 vote.
The PDP constituency mostly believes that Kılıçdaroğlu can help protect the rights of Turkey’s Kurdish minority, which makes up about a fifth of the country’s 85 million population.
The NDP is now the third largest in parliament. However, it has been under pressure from the state since 2015, when it denied Erdogan’s AKP from forming a majority in a surprise election. In particular, he faces a potential ban due to accusations of separatism. However, the party can bypass this by nominating parliamentary candidates on the list of another pro-Kurdish party, the Green Left.
As previously reported, the opposition chose Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), as their presidential candidate and formed an alliance aimed at attracting voters from the left, right, and Islamists. In addition, Kılıçdaroğlu leads Erdoğan by more than 10 percentage points according to a media poll.
