Rafael Grossi noted that nuclear power plants require an external power supply to perform key nuclear safety functions.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has received information about the possible disconnection of the Zaporizhzhya NPP from the last standby 750 kV transmission line. This means the station can once again switch to power from generators. This is stated in the IAEA report, published on Wednesday, March 22.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi recalled that the last backup power line of 330 kilovolts (kV) at the Zaporozhye NPP has been damaged since March 1.
“It remains offline and under repair, again highlighting the vulnerability of nuclear safety and security at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” he said.
According to him, for three weeks, Zaporizhzhya NPP received electricity from a main external power line of 750 kV.
“The plant requires an off-site power supply to perform basic nuclear safety functions. Without a backup line, any damage to the 750 kV line would result in a complete loss of the off-site plant of electricity,” explained Grossi.
He said that the restoration of the line was planned for 5, 10, and then 13 March, but it did not happen. The last date of reconnection is scheduled for March 23.
“The connection to the 750 kV line may be disconnected for an unknown period of time to carry out maintenance/repairs on the line. There is no information yet if this may happen, when it will happen, and for how long,” the IAEA added. Director General.
According to him, nuclear safety at ZNPP remains in a critical condition.
“If disconnection from the main power line and repairs are carried out when the 330 kV line is not available, it will lead to a complete blackout and make the station dependent on diesel generators – the last line of defense this is the seventh time,” Grossi concluded.
We remind you that Grossi previously said that there is a way to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant that was temporarily taken over by the Russian invaders.
