Macron aims to start construction of the first new-generation nuclear reactor EPR2 before the end of his second five-year term in May 2027
The French Parliament has backed the government’s investment plan for nuclear energy, which provides for the construction of six new nuclear reactors. This was reported by Reuters.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Born called it the result of joint work aimed at combating climate change and ensuring energy sovereignty.
The plan comes as France has experienced months of severe outages in its existing fleet of 56 reactors, resulting in a 30-year low in nuclear power production, and a first-generation EPR reactor under construction in western France is several years behind schedule and billions of euros over budget.
French President Emmanuel Macron aims to regain the initiative in parliament with new reforms in the coming weeks after his government threatened to resign over a pension reform plan. Nuclear power is one of the issues on which his Center Party agrees with conservative Republicans and the far-right National Rally.
Macron aims to start building the first new-generation nuclear reactor EPR2 before the end of his second five-year term in May 2027, as part of a plan to build six new reactors at a cost of 52 billion euros.
It was previously reported that France will allocate three million euros for the presence of the IAEA in Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
