Russian President and dictator Vladimir Putin appears to be setting the stage for using the UN Security Council as a platform for a show of force ahead of Russia’s assumption of the UN Security Council presidency in April.
Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) write about this in a new report on March 22.
Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said on Tuesday that Moscow plans to hold an informal meeting of the UN Security Council in early April to discuss “the real situation with Ukrainian children taken to Russia.”
According to him, Russia planned to hold a meeting before the issuance of warrants by the International Criminal Court for the arrest of Putin and children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvovskaya-Belova.
Nebenzi’s statement, as well as the frenzied reaction to the accusations of the ISS by Russian officials, comes as Kremlin-appointed occupation administration officials continue to facilitate the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.
Putin also made a number of comments, declaring Russia’s commitment to the UN Charter during his press conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping the day before.
Comments by Nebenzi and Putin suggest that Russia continues to use its position on the Security Council as a base for power projection, experts write.
