In a surveillance footage released Tuesday by various media outlets, Irvo Otieno is shown handcuffed, ankle-cuffed, bare-chested and without shoes, advancing, hunched over and reaching for agents.
First, he sits on the floor, leaning back on the chair. A few minutes later he appears on the ground and is being held without knowing the reason. One of the officers is standing over him, and the other, apparently, presses his knee to the youth’s head or neck. Up to eight people in all held Otieno while another group watched.
The fight for control of the young man to tie his legs lasts at least 11 minutes, during which the agents press on various parts of his body, especially in the abdomen. When the pressure was released, Otieno was unconscious and without a pulse. Attempts to revive him fail.
family position
Family Irvo Otieno He wanted the video to go public, and earlier last week, his mother, Caroline Ouko, indicated that her son was suffering from a mental breakdown at the time he was taken by the agents.
“My son was treated like a dog, worse than a dog. I saw it with my own eyes (…) they suffocated my child,” he said.
Family lawyer Ben Crump compared the case to the murder of George Floyd, a forty-year-old African American who died in 2020 from being strangled by a white police officer. The video of his ordeal went viral around the world and sparked protests against racism and police violence.
