Ukraine will receive from the UK shells with depleted uranium intended for the Challenger 2 tank, British Deputy Defense Minister Anabel Goldie said.
“In addition to providing Ukraine with a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks, we will provide ammunition, including armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium,” the official said.
He noted that such shells are highly effective for destroying modern tanks and armored vehicles.
Depleted uranium is a toxic heavy metal that is a major by-product of uranium enrichment. This material remains after most of the highly radioactive isotopes of uranium have been selected for use as nuclear fuel or for nuclear weapons.
Recall that the UK will send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. Frontline combat vehicles will arrive in the summer.
