The European Union (EU) has reserved two vaccineone from pharmaceutical company GSK and the other from Seqirus UK, in the event that the World Health Organization (WHO) declares an avian flu pandemic, community health spokesman Stephan de Keersmaeker said on Tuesday.
Brussels has separate contracts for joint purchases of these two vaccineindicated.
“In case the WHO declares a pandemic, companies will update their vaccine to respond to a virus strain,” the spokesperson added.
De Kersmecker assured that European Union “monitoring” the situation bird flu and indicated that the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control had published a risk assessment in this regard.
Outbreak measures
In recent months European Union and several Latin American countries have taken new measures such as expanding protection and surveillance zones or declaring a public health emergency, respectively, due to the spread of outbreaks bird flu.
So European Union changed the protection and surveillance zones specified for the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Slovakia, as well as other surveillance zones in Hungary and Romania, to strengthen control over the latest outbreaks of avian influenza.
