Layoffs at tech giants continue. After Target announced the layoff of 10,000 people last week, joined by Amazon.

Amazon it will carry out the second batch of layoffs, losing 9,000 workers. In January, the e-commerce giant announced it was laying off 18,000 people.

Amazon CEO speaks

Andy Jassisuccessor Jeff Bezosexplained the reasons for the dismissals in internal correspondence.

“Having completed the second phase of our operational plan this week, I am writing to announce that we plan to liquidate approximately 9,000 more positions in the coming weeks, primarily in Amazon web services (AWS), PXT, advertising and twitch. It was a difficult decision, but we believe it will help the company in the long run,” the memorandum says.

No new cuts were reported in January because the teams “haven’t finished their analysis yet,” he said.

Despite everything, Jassi indicated that she is “very optimistic about the future and opportunities for Amazon”.
