Josep Borrell, on behalf of the European Union, expressed support for the investigations of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in Ukraine.
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue an arrest warrant for current Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the process of holding Russian leaders accountable for crimes in Ukraine. This statement was made by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on Sunday, March 19.
“The European Union considers the decision of the II Pre-trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court to issue warrants for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Commissioner for Children’s Rights under the Presidential Administration Maria Lvova-Belova, in connection with which there is suspicion of the crime of illegal deportation and illegal transportation of children in the context of the situation in Ukraine,” the statement said.
Borrell recalled that on December 15, 2022, the heads of state and government of the EU member states welcomed and supported further efforts to ensure full accountability for war crimes and other most serious crimes related to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
“The EU sees the decision of the ICC as the beginning of a process to bring the leaders of Russia to justice for the crimes and atrocities they ordered, permitted or committed in Ukraine,” the head of European diplomacy stressed.
Also, Borrell, on behalf of the European Union, expressed support for the ICC prosecutor’s investigations in Ukraine and called for full cooperation with him from all states of the bloc.
It will be remembered that some EU countries have announced that Putin will be arrested if he dares to appear on their territory.
