The President of Finland personally called Putin to inform him of the decision to join NATO.
Finnish President Sauli Niiniste on Saturday, May 14, called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to announce that his country was joining NATO. This was reported by the press service of the office of the Finnish leader.
“President Niiniste has announced that Finland will decide to apply for NATO membership in the coming days,” the statement said.
He stressed that by joining the alliance, “Finland has strengthened its own security and assumed responsibility.”
According to Niiniste, the decision was influenced by Moscow’s requests for non -expansion of NATO and the war in Ukraine.
In addition, Niiniste expressed his concern about the situation in Ukraine to Putin and called for peace, the report said.
In turn, Putin said that denying Finland’s neutrality would be wrong, allegedly without threats to its security, the Kremlin reported.
He also noted that Finland’s rejection of the neutrality policy could have a negative impact on Russia-Finnish relations.
It was previously reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry was threatening Finland because of NATO.
