Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is due to be arrested in South Africa during his scheduled visit to the country for a summit in August 2023.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the road has limited its foreign travel. During the war, in June 2022, he visited only Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. However, on this plane, the Russian President intends to visit Durban, the second most populated and the main port city of South Africa. This is where the BRICS summit will take place. This was reported by the British TV channel Sky News.
South Africa is among 123 countries that have ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. That is why South Africa is legally bound to enforce Putin’s arrest warrant.
However, the media is skeptical that the President of the Republic of South Africa will order his military to arrest Putin.
In 2015, the Sudanese authorities refused to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was also arrested by the ISS.
On March 17, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is accused of war crimes in Ukraine. After the issuance of the warrant, Putin could be arrested in 123 countries that are parties to the Rome Charter.
Presidents of Ukraine and the United States Vladimir Zelensky and Joe Biden commented positively on this decision of the ISS.
