In Donbass, the Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down a Chinese Mugin-5 drone. The company that makes the drones called the incident “very sad.”
CNN reports that the Mugin-5 drone is commercial and can be purchased from Alibaba and Taobao. The downed UAV was converted and carried explosives, although it can be used for reconnaissance.
The Ukrainian military shot down Mugin-5 from small arms on the night of March 11.
Mugin Limited previously denounced the use of its products during the war and said it stopped selling products in Russia or Ukraine after a full-scale invasion.
The company confirmed to CNN that it was their drone and called the incident “deeply unfortunate.”
The Ukrainian military told CNN that they shot down a drone with small arms — the device was flying at a very low altitude. The correspondent of the TV channel confirmed that ball holes are visible on the body of the UAV.
One expert interviewed by CNN noted that the drone included a bomb release mechanism made from 3D printed components. This, the expert believes, suggests that the drone was designed for multiple use.
What is known about this Chinese drone
Mugin-5 is not a military drone. It is freely sold on the Alibaba and Taobao websites.
The price varies from 10 to 14 thousand dollars. Mugin-5 can be converted for reconnaissance missions or made into a kamikaze drone. OSINT investigators wrote that Ukrainian forces are using Mugin-5. They were noticed during strikes on Russian targets in Crimea last summer.
