Russian spies prepared sabotage on Polish territory and monitored the transfer of Western weapons to Ukraine.
A spy network that worked for Russia and was supposed to prepare for sabotage activities in the country has been liquidated in Poland, local publications report. As part of the investigation, employees of the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained six people, and an alarm was announced on railways and national critical infrastructure due to network activity.
hidden cameras
The detainees are foreigners “from across the eastern border” who are believed to be working for Russian special services. ABW agents arrested them in connection with the discovery of hidden cameras on important railway routes and junctions, which recorded movement on the tracks and transmitted the image to the network.
First of all, we are talking about sections of railways in Podkarpackie Voivodeship – in particular, near the airport in Jasionets, not far from Rzeszow. The airport is the main transit point for Western arms and ammunition destined for Ukraine.Cameras are also installed in other parts of Poland.
Increased risk
In connection with the special operation, the employees of the services and the police were put on high alert. Law enforcement officials are paying special attention to the security of strategically important railway lines in Poland, and the protection of key critical infrastructure facilities has also been strengthened.
In recent months, Poland has identified people suspected of working for Russia on several occasions. Only in January of this year, an indictment was filed in the country’s court against a Russian and a Belarusian citizen, accused of spying for the Russian military intelligence (GRU).
According to the conclusion of the investigation, both defendants are in Polish territory legally. “A citizen of Belarus, first studying at one of the universities of Bialystok, and then getting a job organizing parachute training, established contacts, including social ones, which he used in his activity in favor of Russian military intelligence. The second defendant carried out activities in the interest of Russian intelligence, under the guise of holding cultural and tourism events,” said the representative of the prosecutor’s office.
In addition, while the prosecutor’s office was established, the defendants’ espionage activities focused on military units located in the northeastern part of Poland.
The head of the CIA has arrived
Against the background of the exposure of the Russian network, the head of the CIA, William Burns, flew to Poland. He met with President Andrzej Duda. The meeting discussed the current security situation.
