Conservative pundit can’t define “woke” during interview about her book on awakening

Conservative commentator Bethany Mandel has co-authored an entire book on the “current revival indoctrination” that is supposedly happening across the country. But when asked to define the term in its essence, she was stunned.

Mandel struggled for half a minute to find an answer to what “woke” means during an appearance Tuesday on “Rising,” a web series produced by The Hill.

“This is going to be one of those moments that goes viral,” she accurately predicted.

Finally, the author of Stolen Youth: How Radicals Are Erasing Innocence and Indoctrinating a Generation – published earlier this month – said that “awakening is something that is very difficult to pin down” and said it has to do with the company’s reorganization. creates hierarchies of oppression”.

“It’s hard to explain in a 15-second bite,” he said apologetically.

“Rising” host Briahna Joy Gray responded, “Take your time.”

But Mandel was later rescued by show co-host Robby Soave, who chimed in: “It’s definitely something you know what it is when you see it.”

The term “woke” originated in English-speaking black communities, becoming more widely used in the age of social media to describe awareness of systemic discrimination and inequality. The 2014 police killing of black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri made headlines on Twitter.

In recent years, right-wing pundits and politicians — notably Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — have hijacked the “revival” to criticize and mock progressive ideals. Many offer no definition of the term, leading some observers to characterize the usage as a racist slur that angers conservative voters.
