Erdogan’s negative attitude towards Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO came as a surprise to these countries.
Sweden and Finland reacted to Turkish President Recep Tayyip’s statements about Sweden and Finland’s entry into NATO. This was reported by SVT.
It was noted that Erdogan’s negative attitude to Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO came as a surprise to Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde.
“I met with my Turkish counterpart the other day and we also discussed Sweden’s possible bid for NATO membership a few weeks ago at a bilateral meeting,” he said.
“We have a good and constructive relationship and they haven’t told us anything like that. Neither the NATO ambassadors, nor any of the 30 countries have presented anything like that. Hopefully we can talk about everything, and if we decide to apply for NATO membership, we get positive notices from all countries, “Linde stressed.
As noted by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, his Turkish counterpart has also previously spoken positively about the membership of the two Scandinavian countries in NATO.
“In this process, we need patience … These things are always connected to politics. Most problems are always solved,” Haavisto said.
Recall, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke out against the intention of Sweden and Finland to join NATO. He considers the Scandinavian countries “guest houses for terrorist organizations.”
It was previously reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry was threatening Finland because of NATO.
