A report on Russian disinformation about “military biolabs” in Ukraine was published by the “Center for Global Engagement” at the US State Department. The document notes that Moscow has stepped up a disinformation campaign in an effort to divert attention from its invasion of Ukraine, writes Voice of America.
The report was made public a day after a top foreign policy official said Russia and China were “clearly” united over propaganda and disinformation about the war in Ukraine. They added that the United States and other Western countries have not paid enough attention to combating such disinformation for years. The authors of the report note that “Russia, like the Soviet Union before it, has been making false claims about biological weapons for decades.”
Russia has long been blaming others for what it is doing itself, and its recent Ukraine-related bioweapon claims are no different. The United States estimates that Russia continues to support the offensive bioweapons program in violation of its obligations under the Biological Weapons Convention, the report says.
The report cites numerous examples of disinformation that the Russian Federation has spread since the beginning of the war, in particular, the Kremlin’s absurd dreams of “armies of migratory birds, mosquitoes and bats” are mentioned. Such claims are circulated through “the Russian system of disinformation and propaganda, Kremlin-funded media outlets and websites linked to Russian intelligence” and “so-called “experts.”
