The bloc countries are still trying to negotiate with Hungary, blocking the embargo. However, if this cannot be done on Monday, Russia’s oil embargo may have to be postponed.
Some EU officials say it may be time to consider postponing Russia’s oil ban so they can proceed with another proposed sanctions package if the bloc fails to convince Hungary to support the embargo. Bloomberg reported this on Thursday night, May 12th.
The governments did not give up their goal of reaching a full package in Budapest, including a phased oil ban, on Monday, when EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels, EU diplomats said. But the idea of abandoning Russia’s oil is gaining support, diplomats added.
Other countries, however, are worried that lifting the oil embargo would be a sign of weakness, another diplomat said.
Recall that in Hungary they said they were ready to support the embargo on offshore oil supplies and some others, but Russia’s supplies via pipeline to Hungary should be excluded from the restrictions.
Earlier, the media reported that the European Commission was willing to compensate Hungary for the imposition of an embargo on Russia’s oil supplies of Budapest as part of the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation for its invasion of Ukraine.
